More than ever, ‘Sweater Weather’ has become a cult term- its own ideological occurrence even. And one thing that has aided sweater’s emergence into popularity is cinema. Bridget Jones can’t go a new film without an iconic, outlandish and fuzzy Christmas jumper. Clint Eastwood’s poncho (yes, it’s a sweater akin to Burberry AW15) in The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.
But what about Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast and Tiffany’s, or Sally Albright (and Harry Burns’ even chunkier knit) in When Harry Met Sally?
So where did the love story between sweater and wearer occur? And why has the sweater got such a cult following and such an iconic presence in cinema?
There’s no definitive answer and like with any trend, some remain. With cinema, we see characters in our favourite scenes, delivering the most cutting lines and in the most beautiful shots wearing sweaters, and the crux of it is, maybe that’s all it takes to create such a following.
So, here’s a round-up of some of our favourites.
Knives Out (2019)- Marta Cabrera’s lilac chunky knit (she dons a striped one grey one too, but the lilac one is lush!)
Girlfriend’s and Boyfriends (1987) – Turquoise cardigans and red crewneck sweaters á la 80s.
Anna Lucasta (1958) – Anna’s (Eartha Kitt) v-neck tightly woven sweater with a dainty necklace for decoration. She also wears a knitted vest with heavy jewellery. You simply can’t choose one.
Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (1987)– Mirabelle’s thick blue knit at the supermarket (Forever looking for this at vintage stores).
When Harry Met Sally (1989)- Sally Albright (and Harry Burns’ even chunkier knit) is iconic. Enough said.
Boogie (2021) – Taylor Takahashi as Alfred ‘Boogie’ Chin and Taylour Paige as Eleanor. Both stylish. Both rocking the trends of the 90’s and we don’t mind.
Last Holiday (2006) – Although you can barely see it, Georgia Byrd’s yellow sweater against the contracting pink coat is simply everything.
While You Were Sleeping (1995) – Lucy’s Oversised sweater
Empire Records (1995)- Corey Mason’s Blue Cropped Sweater
A Rainy Day in New York (2019) – Shannon Tyrell’s ochre crew-neck, and Ashleigh Enright’s peach polo neck.
Clueless (1995)- From the bright orange cropped knit, to the darker blue vest knit Dionne Davenport has knitwear covered.
